Math Work Station Binder Update (Ch. 7)

Sorry I'm behind - you know - LIFE!! Well anyway, I've added some wonderful resources posted by wonderful  teachers in our blog community. Stop by to view my binder. This is the greatest way to store and organize materials and ideas. I can't wait to upload all of my materials into another binder.

Shapes, Shapes Everywhere and Not a Bite to Eat

My copy of Debbie Diller's Math Stations came yesterday. I was so excited when I say the UPS truck leaving my street. I wanted to share this activity to go with Chapter 7. During our unit on three-dimensional shapes, we made models using foam shapes, marshmallows, and toothpicks. Several years ago, I tried the activity with coffee stirrers and pipe cleaners. The children had trouble forming the shapes. So I adapted the idea to make it edible. Hope you try it this year with your mathematicians. You can link up with Chapter 7 here.

Rectangular Prism - check out his design using  supporting toothpicks
Triangular Pyramid
Another triangular pyramid -  I was impressed with her engineering skills. She laid out each face then smushed the marshmallows together at the top to join them.

Favorite Books Linky Party

Reading is an adventure that unlocks worlds, feelings, passions, and memories we hold dear.
My favorite childhood book has to be Margeret Wise Brown's Goodnight Moon. In seventh grade, I would walk from class to class with a book in hand. We passed around Judy Blume's Are You There God?, It's Me Margaret. By the time I got to read it, I had to hold it gingerly so the pages wouldn't fall out. My favorite classroom read aloud is The Gingerbread Cowboy. I discovered this book several years ago while looking for versions of gingerbread man stories. One of my boys rapped the repeating verse and I was hooked. Every year when I share this book, I have to share the story of why it's my favorite. During the school year, I only read profession books. My favorite is Debbie Miller's Reading With Meaning. I still pick it up every year and discover a new insight to incorporate in my reading instruction. During the summer, I love to find a great beach book - something that stirs up emotions and causes me to reflect on my personal relationships. My absolute favorite so far was a book I read last summer - The Help. Currently, I am doing something I have never done before - I am reading more than one book at the same time. These are my current reads: Debbie Diller's Spaces and Places, Nicholas Sparks' A Walk To Remember, Candice Cameron Bure's Reshaping It All, and Debbie Diller's math station book (online).

Now it's your turn, but don't delay. There are only a few more days to join the party.

I really want tubs like everyone is finding at the Target dollar spots. Here's the problem - I can't find a Target with these tubs without traveling for more than an hour or so. I will send a wonderful personal shopper the funds to purchase them for me and cover shipping costs. Is there anyone out there who would be willing to help out a fellow teacher and bloggy friend? You can leave me a comment with your email or just email me by clicking on the button below.

Interest Survey Linky Party

My Top Ten

10. I finally have a home. I moved all over the state of South Carolina while I was growing up. Now Gaffney is my home - I've lived here for 22 years.

9. I've only been teaching for 7 years. I was a stay at home mom.

8. Just recently became a Nicholas Sparks fan. I had seen several of his movies and needed a good beach read - The Guardian. Loved it!! Next on my list is A Walk to Remember.

7. My favorite movies are the Pirates of the Caribbean movies.

6.Favorite scene from Pirates is on the beach when Will says good-bye to Elizabeth. If you haven't seen it, I don't want to spoil it. Let's just say that I am ready to kiss my hubbie right then!

5. Reality TV reminds me how truly blessed I am. Housewives!! Ha - most of them aren't even wives any more. And yet, I still keep watching.

4. With that said, those are only my guilty sneeks on TV. My absolute favs are The Mentalist, Drop      Dead Diva, Criminal Minds, and Supernatural, of course. I married a Dean!!!

3. Teaching is a calling for me. It's what God had planned for my life. Each day I ask him to lead me in my actions, words, and in everything I do.

2. My other calling was to be a mother of three wonderful children. I have two boys, 16 and 13, and a girl, 10. They bring joy, laughter and tears daily.

1. My husband (the coach) and I are about to celebrate our 19th anniversary. He is my best friend. He jokes with me all the time that empty nest is just another opportunity to extend our love to his athletes - and, once again, he is soooo right!

You just got a postcard, you just got a postcard

Who doesn't love to see anything besides a bill in the mailbox? My class will be participating in a postcard exchange and am inviting you to join in the fun. Our school is revamping our hallways with freshly painted lampposts and street signs. I want to have a mailbox installed outside my door, but may have to settle for my teacher box. I'll live. Hurry, before you run out of time. Start looking for state postcards at your local flea markets or Cracker Barrel store. has discounts on bulk postcards and they're available in many different formats for each state.

Giveaway is in sight!!

Well friends, I'm 6 followers away from 100!! You know what that means, a freebie and a giveaway. I will post a freebie as soon as I hit it. Then I will choose 4 winners to choose some fabulous prizes. Details will follow. Help me get there by posting and leaving a comment. If you refer a follower, be sure to let me know for an extra chance to win. Thank you to all of you who have been there to support me along this journey. Because of your tips and tutorials, I have been able to create two more blogs for my online course.

Math Work Station Binder Update

Okay, so I took a little longer than the weekend. Sorry. I'm working on my second masters this summer in addition to this book study and reading two other books (one professional/one fun). I have updated some wonderful resources for chapters 5 and 6. I'll post the Ch. 7 resources by next weekend.

Can you believe I only spent $26?

I'm disappointed, but happy with my finds. I went to Target looking for the wonderful baskets and bins everybody was finding only to be disappointed yet again. However, I did find the cutest and kid friendly wipe off markers and erasers to use with these cute posters. Money, money, money!!! I have so many ideas for these mats.

These boxes are going to store partner sets of base ten manipulatives. The trays are for sorting. I have some round trays I bought at DT several years ago, but I can place rule cards or math talk cards in the center for sorting. The calendar notepad was so cute, but I got an idea while I was staring at it in the middle of DT. At first I tried to justify buying it as another organizational tool, but then I remembered TIMELINE!! It's magnetic - so I'll write important events for the week and post it on the fridge in my room. After we complete the events, the page can be torn off and added to the classroom scrapbook with a picture of the week!! I'm super ecstatic over this idea.

Are you too busy or scared to design a blog?

If the answer is yes, then you must click here immediately. Jena Snowden has extended her giveaway deadline until midnight tomorrow night. If you already have a blog, she'll design a new one for you. This is great if you want to add a classroom blog like me.
